Donald Ross
Donald Ross is considered the most prolific golf course architect in history. Designing and overseeing the construction of more than 400 golf courses throughout the US, his creative genius gave him a reputation for creating great golf courses that were a test for all abilities.
Ross's clear vision for how the game should be played called for the golfer to have a balanced attack. "No proficient skill should make up for deficiencies in the golfer's game."
His goal was to "force a man to use judgment and to exercise mental control in making the correct shot." As such, his measurement of a good golf course demanded "...accurate tee shots, accurate iron play, precise handling of the short game and consistent putting."
All Donald Ross courses live up to that standard, including his most famous designs, Pinehurst no.2, Oakland Hills, Seminole, Salem Country Club, Essex Country Club, and Worcester Country Club.
The Maplewood reflects all of Donald Ross's creativity in demanding both course management and shot making ability. Beautifully laid out and recently renovated, The Maplewood is one of the few Donald Ross courses in Northern New England that remains true to the architect's original vision.
